Today is National Voter Registration Day and there are 1,500 statewide and local races and ballot initiatives that will be decided this November, including a key Georgia Senate seat. The deadline to register to vote in Georgia for the Tuesday, November 5th election is Oct. 7.
Based on state resources, some 6,682,600 Georgians are eligible to vote and 5,755,750 are actually registered, that leaves some 926,850 who can be registered through community wide efforts. These numbers are similar in other Southern states as well even though the battle for fair voting laws was waged 50 years ago. There are civic and community groups out today all over Georgia registering voters. If you know someone who has moved or turned 18 since the last election, they can register at http://elections.ourtime.org/vote.
