ALEXANDRIA, VA – Today, the national grassroots organization Ready for Hillary named former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin as a senior advisor. Franklin, who will advise Ready for Hillary in its outreach programs to women, African-Americans and public officials, will announce her support for the group in an e-mail to its supporters today.
The first African-American woman mayor of a major southern city, Shirley Franklin is currently Chairman of the Board and CEO of Purpose Built Communities and the Barbara Jordan Visiting Professor in Ethics and Political Values for the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. Franklin, a recipient of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, was named “Public Official of the Year” by GOVERNING magazine and one of “America’s Best Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report. She endorsed then-Senator Obama for president in early 2008.
“The Ready for Hillary movement is inspiring, and along with all other supporters, I am excited and proud to join this effort,” said Franklin. “It’s bringing together people from red states and blue states, young and old, long-time Hillary supporters and new ones like me.”
“As the first African-American woman to serve as Mayor of Atlanta, I know what’s it like to break barriers – and how much hard work that takes. I was honored to be an early supporter of Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential primary and help his campaign make history. And there’s so much more progress to be made for our country, including breaking the ‘glass ceiling.’ That’s a big reason why I’m ready for Hillary Clinton to be the next President of the United States.”
With more than one million supporters, Ready for Hillary is encouraging former Secretary of State Clinton to run for president in 2016. Ready for Hillary is assembling an army of grassroots supporters and sending a message that if she is ready to run for president, we are ready to support her. We believe Hillary Clinton is the best qualified person to be president in 2016 and that her historic election would build upon the progress of President Obama and continue to lead this country into the future.
