Abigail’s Gone Fishing

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments tomorrow in Fisher v. University of Texas, a case that once again challenges racial discrimination in higher education. Abigail Fisher, is the plaintiff who applied to the University of Texas-Austin. Fisher is challenging UT Austin’s consideration of race as one of the many factors that should be considered in college admissions. It is not the first time the court has considered race in college admission decisions. In the 2003 landmark Grutter v. Bollinger decision the Supreme Court upheld the affirmative action program at the University of Michigan Law School.

The topic has been the subject of many news stories and talk shows, one of the most comprehensive and thorough panel discussions was on Sunday’s MSNBC Melissa Harris-Perry’s program. Whatever your personal thoughts on the future Supreme Court decision, the discussion on Perry’s show is worth reviewing.
